Preschoolers discover the Power of Percussion
As part of this week’s” Theme for the week” on World Music, Dress & Food; Denis Kigongo from Abantu Arts visited us on Tuesday 8th February
Abantu Arts, is an African arts education company that seeks to raise awareness of Africa. By promoting an understanding and appreciation of African arts to children, enabling them to feel connected to Africa and its culture, all through African drumming, dance, singing & Story telling. Denis, who was originally from Uganda in East Africa, & now lives and works in Devon, brought along with him authentic African drums and African percussion instruments & through a most memorable experience of live music, “we discovered that everyone has a rhythm to share!” Emphasis was placed on learning how to play together through listening, cooperation, respect and working together as a team, and Denis taught us about the origins of the different instruments and how they are played in different parts of Africa. The Children (& Staff) were totally immersed in the flavour & energy of African Music & would like to say a very big Thank you to Denis; "it was a very positive and stimulating morning & the beauty and energy that the traditional African Drumming generated was very motivating. All our children enjoyed and learned from this most memorable musical experience... it has definitely been a highlight from the spring term" For more information on Denis, African Drumming and Abantu Arts: please visit http://www.abantuarts.com/ Ugandan-born youth worker Denis Kigongo is also involved in a Charity Medical Centre.
